Apple's entry into foldables has turned a two-horse race into a genuine three-way choice. The iPhone Duo (on sale October 23 in Canada), Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 (launched July 2026), and Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold (launched August 2026) are all book-style foldables, a small outer screen that opens into a tablet-sized inner display. They differ sharply in price, weight, cameras, and the ecosystems around them. Here is how they compare on paper, with Canadian pricing, as of October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • On price, the iPhone Duo is the outlier: $2,999 CAD (256GB) vs $2,399 CAD for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and $2,499 CAD for the Pixel 11 Pro Fold.
  • Samsung's Z Fold 8 is the lightest (201g) and thinnest; Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold has the largest screens and the only dedicated telephoto camera.
  • The iPhone Duo is the heaviest (254g) but brings Grade 5 titanium, IP68, and the biggest battery claim, with zero independent testing so far.
  • Samsung and Google's foldables have been on sale for months and are more likely to see discounts; the Duo launches at full price on October 23.
  • Ecosystem lock-in is the real decider: switching platforms costs more in apps, accessories, and habits than any spec gap.

Design and portability: Samsung wins, Apple lags

Portability is the Galaxy Z Fold 8's clearest advantage. At 201g it is dramatically lighter than the Pixel 11 Pro Fold (239g) and the iPhone Duo (254g), Apple's foldable is the heaviest of the three by a considerable margin. Samsung also wins on thickness: 4.5mm unfolded and 9.7mm folded, versus 5.0/10.1mm for the Pixel and 5.2/11.3mm for the Duo. If the phone will live in a pocket all day, those grams and millimetres are felt.

Apple compensates on paper with durability: a Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge, Ceramic Shield protection, and an IP68 rating, full dust and water resistance. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is also IP68. Samsung's Z Fold 8 carries only an IP48 rating, meaning weaker dust protection. For a device with a moving hinge, that difference is worth noting.

One caveat on the Duo's design numbers: Apple's "passport-shaped" proportions mean a short, wide 5.4-inch outer display. Samsung's 5.5-inch cover screen is similarly narrow. Google's 6.5-inch cover display is the only one that feels like using a normal phone when the device is closed, a meaningful day-to-day difference if you mostly use the outer screen.

Displays: Google goes biggest, Apple goes anti-glare

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold offers the most screen real estate: an 8-inch inner display and a 6.5-inch cover screen, plus the highest claimed peak brightness at 3,600 nits. The iPhone Duo and Galaxy Z Fold 8 both use 7.6-inch inner displays at up to 3,000 nits.

Apple's differentiator is the nano-texture finish on the Duo's inner display, designed to cut glare and make the crease less visible, a direct attack on the foldable's oldest complaint. All three run 120Hz on both screens. None of this has been independently measured yet for the Duo; Samsung and Google's panels are known quantities from months of reviews.

Performance: strong claims, one untested chip

The three chips cannot be compared directly from spec sheets. Apple's A20 Pro is built on a 2nm process with a 7-core GPU Apple says is up to 40% faster than the A19 Pro, plus a vapour chamber for sustained performance. Samsung uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5; Google uses its own Tensor G6.

Early Geekbench 6 results for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, which shares the A20 Pro, are ahead of the Galaxy Z Fold 8, but the Duo itself has not been independently benchmarked. Real-world testing after October 23 will settle this. For gaming specifically, the Snapdragon has historically been the stronger fit than Tensor, with the A20 Pro's position still to be determined. RAM favours Google (16GB standard) over Apple's fixed 12GB, though Apple's memory management has traditionally needed less.

Cameras: Pixel is the only one with real zoom

Google is the only manufacturer here with a dedicated telephoto camera: the Pixel 11 Pro Fold pairs a 48MP main and 10.5MP ultrawide with a 10.8MP telephoto offering 5x optical zoom. The iPhone Duo (48MP main + 48MP ultrawide, with 2x optical-quality zoom from the main sensor) and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 (50MP main + 50MP ultrawide) both lack a true zoom lens.

If distant subjects, concerts, or kids' sports are your use case, the Pixel wins on hardware alone. For everything else, all three main sensors are flagship-class on paper, with the usual reminder that the Duo's camera has not been tested by anyone outside Apple yet. (Samsung also sells a Z Fold 8 Ultra with a 200MP main camera and telephoto, starting at $2,699 CAD, but that is a different tier of device and price.)

Battery and charging: Apple's big claim, Samsung's fast top-up

Apple claims the largest effective battery: a dual-cell system estimated around 5,400 mAh, rated for up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, 44 hours on the outer display, and 24 hours of mixed use. Samsung (4,800 mAh) and Google (4,806 mAh) are nearly identical on capacity.

Charging favours Samsung for raw speed (45W wired), while Apple's 50%-in-20-minutes claim is competitive and Google's 30W wired trails both. Wireless: Apple supports 25W MagSafe/Qi2, Google 25W, Samsung 20W. Treat Apple's battery claims as claims until independent tests land, manufacturer video-playback figures are measured under ideal conditions.

Canadian pricing: the Duo's premium is real

At every storage tier, the iPhone Duo costs more than both rivals in Canada, roughly $500–600 more than the Galaxy Z Fold 8 at 256GB, widening at higher tiers. Only Apple offers a 2TB option, at $4,799 CAD.

Just as important is timing. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold have been on the market since summer 2026 and are, in PC Guide's words, "more susceptible to a deal right now", discounts have already appeared. The Duo launches at full price on October 23. With Black Friday on November 27, patient buyers may see the first Duo promotions, or deeper cuts on the Samsung and Google devices, within weeks of Apple's launch.

Who should buy which?

  • Buy the iPhone Duo if you are committed to the Apple ecosystem (Apple Watch, AirPods, iCloud, App Store purchases), want the largest iPhone display ever made, and value the titanium build and IP68 rating. Accept that you are paying a $500+ premium and buying a first-generation product with no independent reviews yet.
  • Buy the Galaxy Z Fold 8 if portability matters most, it is the lightest and thinnest by a wide margin, or if you want the fastest wired charging and the mature foldable software experience Samsung has refined over eight generations.
  • Buy the Pixel 11 Pro Fold if you want the biggest screens, the only real telephoto camera of the three, full IP68 protection, and Google's AI-forward software, at $500 less than the Duo.

No single "best" exists here because the criteria differ: lightest, biggest screens, best zoom, and deepest ecosystem each point to a different phone. For full Canadian pricing and release-date details on Apple's entry, see iPhone Duo price and release guide. And if you are timing a purchase around discounts, our early guide at Black Friday early planning guide covers what to expect on November 27.

Practical next steps

  • Decide your ecosystem first, switching between iOS and Android costs more in repurchased apps, accessories, and habits than any spec difference.
  • If you want the Duo, pre-orders open October 16; if you want a deal, watch Samsung's and Google's prices through Prime Big Deal Days (October 6–7) and Black Friday.
  • Wait for independent Duo reviews in November before treating Apple's battery and performance claims as fact.
  • Check carrier financing and trade-in values in Canada, at these prices, a trade-in can move the math substantially.

The bottom line

On paper, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the most portable, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold has the best screens and the only true zoom camera, and the iPhone Duo brings Apple-ecosystem integration and premium materials at a steep premium, with everything still unproven in the real world. Until independent testing lands after October 23, the honest ranking is: Samsung and Google are the known quantities; Apple is the expensive bet.
